Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning

Platform: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Genre: Role Playing Game (RPG), Action, Open World

My favourite genre of games are RPGs so it pains me when I play one that tries to be like Fable and gets it oh so wrong! Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning was recommended to me via a work friend who doesn’t normally like RPGs, so I had the understanding that if this game can convert a non RPG fan, then I would surely enjoy it.

The customisation features when picking a character seemed promising, with four different races to choose from and a gender selection, each race has a unique style and fighting technique. Being able to change face shapes, lip definitions and eye shadow allowed me to personalise my character and invest time into their appearance. As far as gameplay is concerned, it all seems to go downhill from there.

The world in which the player is thrown into is in turmoil, the ‘Well of Souls’ has brought you back to life and the experiment of Fomorous Hugues has finally worked! Sounds promising. Until the Tuatha destroy it and try to kill you all over again. Travelling into the nearest village will allow your character to interact and discover more about the world around them yet; in an effort to develop a realistic world the overload of information provided is too confusing. Talking to a character and selecting a topic that you wish to know more about is a great tactic to explore the world and build knowledge of the different races/wars brewing.
